Defense Secretary Gates Likens Libyan Rebels' Chaos To 'Pick-Up Ballgame'

The picture painted by Defense Secretary Gates of the Libyan rebels didn't give reason for optimism. Gates said the lack of military command and control among the rebels made their efforts lengthened the odds against them in their fight against Gadhafi's better trained and equipped troops.

Revving Up For 2012, GOP Hits Obama On Gas Prices

High oil and gas prices are emerging as a big issue in the 2012 presidential campaign. Oil market analysts say recent price hikes have more to do with turmoil in the Middle East than administration policies. Still, potential Republican candidates are trying to draw a direct line between high gas prices and President Obama.

Tim Blair Phones in Another Smear (Littlegreenfootballs.com)

We all know that the right wing is constantly cooking up outrageous outrages
about Barack Obama. But there's also a little cottage industry of wingnut
bloggers who perform the same function -- directed at me.

Case in point, climate change denier and far right loon Tim Blair, who phones
in another attack piece at his Australian blog to say I'm now changing my
opinion about Dan Rather. Blair titles his mindless post: LITTLE DAN
FOOTBALLS. Get it?

> Seven years after CBS and Dan Rather were busted for airing fake memos about
George W. Bush's National Guard service, someone is making excuses: "In the
case of the fake memos, CBS News wasn't pushing something they knew to be
false."

>

> That someone is reborn leftoid Charles Johnson, whose involvement in the
case helped bring down Rather. He seems to regret it.

This quote comes from a comment in our thread about Fox News executive Bill
Sammon's promotion of the "Obama's a socialist" meme, even though he didn't
believe it himself. Someone compared that incident to the Dan Rather/fake
memos story, and I replied with the quote you see above -- but as usual, the
ever-dishonest Blair takes ...

Urban Wildlife (Powerlineblog.com)

(John)

We live in a neighborhood with quite a bit of wildlife. We see coyotes, foxes,
deer of course, and lots of birds: eagles, hawks, wild turkeys, owls and many
more. Last summer we had to deal with a hawk that tried to build a nest on our
house.

This spring it's an owl--a great horned owl, I'm not sure whether he has a
mate or not. But we hear him hooting all the time and have often seen him in
the trees around our house. Tonight I was home alone and heard the hooting; I
looked out my kitchen window and there he was, looking at me. It was almost
dusk, but I grabbed my camera and got this photo:

The proliferation of wildlife in urban and suburban settings is one of the fun
features of modern life.

In Syria, President's Cabinet Resigns

Syria's president has accepted his cabinet's resignation and promised to introduce new reforms that would "make the people happy." The move follows a now familiar script: Tunisia and Egypt also saw mass departures among top government officials in response to protests ? though in both cases, the president himself ultimately resigned as well. It's unclear if the change will appease protesters who have been demonstrating for two weeks in defiance of Syria's emergency laws, which have been in effect since 1963. Michele Norris talks with Al Jazeera English reporter Rula Amin.

Portuguese Bailout Costs More Than Money

Matthew Lynn, Bloomberg
Is it 50 billion euros? Or perhaps 70 billion euros? The cost of bailing out Portugal varies according to who makes the calculation. No one will know the real price until officials from the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank tell us.But it isn’t the actual amount that counts. It is the price the euro area is paying for having a single currency.
