A Father Reflects On Strength And Meeting His Match

Robert Stover, 83, grew up moving from town to town. Born puny but bright, he tells his daughter, Valerie Anderson, 56, that he got beaten up a lot. Later, he married Valerie's mom, Kay, who was beautiful but scrawny and strong-willed. "She was my match. Some days, she was more than my match."

Youth Joblessness Creates Ripple Effect

While the overall unemployment rate is stuck at 9.1 percent, the unemployment rate for 16- to 19-year-olds has been going up since February. Not having a summer or after-school job affects more than just a kid's wallet. It also has real consequences for his or her personal and economic development.

Stagnant Job Growth Renews Recession Fears

Job growth stalled completely in August, leading to renewed fears the U.S. economy could tip into recession. Employers added zero net jobs during the month, and the unemployment rate held steady at 9.1 percent. It was the first time the economy failed to add new jobs in nearly a year.

Rain-Packed Tropical Storm Forms Off Louisiana

Heavy rains from Tropical Storm Lee were falling in southern Louisiana and pelting the Gulf Coast on Saturday as the storm's center trudged slowly toward land, where businesses were already beginning to suffer on what would normally be a bustling holiday weekend.

Green Energy Future Goes Bankrupt

Rich Lowry, National Review
We have seen the future, and it went bankrupt. If the praises of high-ranking Obama-administration officials were a viable business plan, the solar-panel maker Solyndra would be an industrial juggernaut. Vice President Biden insisted that the jobs created by the California-based firm would "allow America to compete and to lead like we did in the 20th century."Â Â

What's Off the Table in 2012?

Victor Davis Hanson, National Review
What should we not expect during next summer's presidential campaign, given what was put off limits in 2008 and later? There is much talk about what some are perceiving as the fringe religiosity of Republican candidates such as Michele Bachman and Rick Perry. But the media established the precedent four years ago that no candidate can be held responsible for his church. Barack Obama's pastor of more than 20 years, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, was an unapologetic racist, an anti-Semite, and a raving conspiracy theorist whose parishioners gave him standing ovations for his hate-filled...

Weiner's Old Seat Not So Safe for Democrats

Caitlin Huey-Burns, RCP
Voters in the traditionally blue 9th Congressional District of New York have less than two weeks before choosing a successor to Anthony Weiner, who resigned in June after admitting to inappropriate relationships with women online. To the surprise of many, the race has become competitive over the past month, attracting money and effort from the national parties, though several political experts in the state believe Democrats will ultimately squeak by. In recent days, however, Democratic candidate David Weprin complicated his party's chances of holding on to the seat by committing a...
